The World Around Us (Science, history and geography)

This area of learning helps us explore and find answers to the many questions we have relating to the world around us.

In geography we investigate:

  • weather and how weather is recorded; extreme weather specifically wind;

  • developed and developing countries;

  • the rainforest.

In history we explore:

  • The Victorians – Queen Victoria, education, growth of towns, society and inventions;

  • The Famine and emigration.

In science we investigate:

  • Light and shadows;

  • Planets & the solar system;
  • Plants;

  • Renewable and non-renewable energy;

  • Electricity – conductors and insulators;

  • Materials – reversible and irreversible changes;

  • Drug and alcohol misuse;

  • How sounds travel.

The Arts (Art, drama and music)

  • We will have opportunities to use a range of mediums such as chalk, oil pastels, paint, clay and collage materials.  Where possible art activities link to other subject areas.

  • We present a class assembly each year and we also hold an end of year show.

  • In music we sing, create stories and pictures using instruments and develop our ability to play the recorder.

Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PD&MU)

Personal development and Mutual understanding helps us to build confidence and self esteem as individuals.  We explore our emotions, attitudes and moral values and gain an understanding of a healthy lifestyle.  We appreciate the need for mutual understanding and respect other cultures.  We recognise that we have a responsibility to look after our environment.  In P7 we focus on our culture through EMU.

ICT

We use ICT across the curriculum.  We use ICT to carry out research for project work.  We use programs such as Powerpoint and Publisher to present information. Online quizzes and activities help to reinforce our learning. We use Logo to explore angles.  We also carry out tasks each year to enable each pupil to gain ICT Accreditation.

Physical Education

During P.E. we participate in dance, gymnastics, games, athletics and swimming activities.

School Trips

In P7 we go on residential trip.  This year the trip is to Edinburgh.  Coming up to Christmas each year we go to The Argory.  We participate in Victorian Christmas activities and we become Victorian school children for the day! We also enjoy participating in Taster Days organised by schools in the secondary sector to give us a taste of what's to come next year!
